Hi there! During this lesson we’re going to learn how
to talk about different problems or conditions which are related to our bodies. So, here are some examples of how to describe
various problems related to our bodies: You can say – I’ve got a sore arm I’ve got a sore wrist I’ve got a sore neck I’ve got sore legs I’ve got sore eyes I’ve got a headache I’ve got earache, toothache, backache, stomach ache. These are the only body parts with which you can use the word: ache. Note that you
say a headache, but for the other body parts you don’t use the indetermined article a.
I’ve got heart ache is a metaphorical way to say that your heart is broken, because
your boyfriend or girlfriend has left you. You can also say – My right thumb is hurting My hand hurts here. My hand My jaw hurts here I can feel a strong pain in my stomach I’ve got really painful backache. I must be getting old! I’ve got a black eye because someone punched me. Black eye. I’ve got a big bruise on my arm I banged my elbow on a wall I slipped on the road and grazed my knee. I scratched my arm when I climbed over a
barbed wire fence. I fell off my bike and cut the palm of my
hand on a sharp rock. My eyes are stinging because I touched them after putting my fingers into some chilli pepper. Ouch! I’ve got something in my eye. It was windy on the beach so maybe some sand blew into my eye. I’ve got diarrhoea (UK) diarrhea (USA) I keep going to the toilet. I’m about to be sick. You can also say: I think I’m going to vomit, or you can use the
slang expressions: puke, barf, or throw up. I’ve got a temperature, I feel hot and cold, and I’ve got the shivers. I’ve got a rash here on my left forearm My neck is itchy I think I’ve broken my collar bone My finger is broken I broke my leg yesterday when I fell off my bike. I think I was bitten by an insect the other day. I’ve just been stung by a bee or a wasp I must have been bitten by a spider or a snake So, these are some ways of talking about different
things which can happen to our bodies. Try chatting with a new friend on GoSpeakEnglish
and ask them if they’re ever been bitten by a strange wild animal! And that’s the end of this lesson!
