Is Muskmelon Good For Diabetes?

Is Muskmelon Good For Diabetes?

Hello, I’m Ty Mason from TheDiabetesCouncil.com,
researcher, writer and I have type 2 diabetes. Today I’m going to answer the question, is
muskmelon good for diabetes. But before we get into that, make sure you
download my free diabetes management book which also includes a diabetes grocery shopping
guide (foods to eat and avoid) by clicking the link below. If you saw our video on watermelon and diabetes,
you know I am a big fan of melons. There is very little in the summer that is
better than ice cold watermelon or cantaloupe, or is it muskmelon? I have heard this delicious fruit called both. So are they the same? There is technically a difference, but the
names are often used interchangeably. According to Jennifer Shultz Nelson, the term
cantaloupe refers to two varieties of muskmelon. There is the North American cantaloupe, Cucumis
melo reticulatus. The other variety is the European cantaloupe,
Cucumis melo cantalupensis, looks nothing like what we commonly call cantaloupe. While both of these cantaloupe varieties are
muskmelons, not all muskmelons are cantaloupes. Muskmelons have been avoided by many with
diabetes because when looking at the nutritional data, we see 16 carbs, 14 of which are sugars. So that can’t possibly be a good choice
of those of us with diabetes. Muskmelon, like watermelon, has a higher GI
than most foods recommended for diabetes, at 65, which still is in the medium range. But you know I am a bigger fan of the GL because
it shows a better representation of how a food will affect your blood sugar. The GL of muskmelon is only 5 which is a low
GL food. Muskmelon is a great source for Vitamins A
and C as well as Potassium. It also contains several antioxidants. So, is muskmelon good for diabetes? Yes it is. But as with any food, moderation is always
the key. You are getting sugar in muskmelon. Although the sugar you are getting is fructose
rather sucrose. Fructose will not affect your blood sugar
in the same way as sucrose, but it will affect is a bit. Be careful and don’t eat whole melon. Fruit is a must in a healthy diet plan, melons
are a great addition. I hope this answered your question is muskmelon
good or bad for diabetes. Don’t forget to get your diabetes management
book by clicking the link in the description box below. Let me know if you have any other diabetes
related questions. Thank you
I am Ty Mason
