Glucosamine & Chondroitin Poor Choice for Knee Pain | Consumer Reports

Alejandra Morales has knee pain. I can’t run like I used to run. I want to feel active. In fact, one in two adults will
eventually develop knee pain from osteoarthritis. In their search for
relief, many people try dietary supplements
that contain glucosamine and chondroitin based on
the flashy commercials that claim they can ease joint pain. But Consumer Reports medical
adviser Dr. Orly Avitzur says they aren’t likely to help. There’s very little
medical evidence that these two supplements
will ease your joint pain. And glucosamine
and chondroitin can pose risks that include an
increase in blood sugar levels and a greater chance of
bleeding when taken with blood thinners like warfarin. They can also worsen
high blood pressure and may trigger
abnormal heart rhythms. Instead of using
glucosamine and chondroitin, Consumer Reports and
the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons released
the Choosing Wisely report, which encouraged
people with knee pain to talk to their doctors, who
may suggest you get moving with low impact activities
like walking or swimming, combined with exercises
to stretch and strengthen the muscles around the joints. It’s likely you’ll still need
something for pain flare ups. We recommend over-the-counter,
non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory drugs,
like ibuprofen or naproxen. And if you’re still having
pain, see an orthopedist who can evaluate the actual
damage to your joints.

  1. THE most wrong video you ever post. Change your doctor!!! NSAIDS for the knees ?!!! If you want the real answer for that problem ask me and I will tell you

  2. Glocosamine and chrondritin work for me. I definitely notice a subtle difference within a couple weeks of starting to use it.

  3. Disappointed with consumer reports.
Chondroitin sulfate and glucosamine work. But the stuff being sold by bigpharma does not. The initial research was done on these compounds derived from seaweed. That is an expensive process. Once the market became profitable and bigpharma jumped onboard, they found a cheaper source, shellfish.
I wish someone would compare the two sources. I use the shellfish free Glucosamine and chondroitin and I feel a clear difference. I buy it from Amazon made by a company called Solgar.

  4. Shame on you Consumer Reports. Do you really believe that big pharmaceutical and those she control like doctors will ever accept the fact that there is something better that what they have? That will never happen. They will always discredit any other thing that can't keep you as an addict. By the way what are secondary effects of aleve or naproxen? Just to name a few: Fast or irregular or racing heart beat, constipation, decrease in urine output, stomach pain night blindness etc, etc. Do you home work people. You gut to ask about the secondary effect but not the one in aleve. You should be neutral and inform the consumer in both ways.

  5. What nonsense is this. If you have arthritis, osteoporosis, ligament damage or inflammation of joints you better be on bone supplements that includes vit d, calcium, magnesium, msm, chondroitin etc….. The MDs don't care about your health. They sell big pharmaceutical drugs to limit your pain and offer surgery while not solving the degenerative problem which is clearly aging deficiencies

  6. Wheres the research? I read the original research and used successfully these naturally occurring items.
Suspect Consumer Reports has sold out to the Pharmaceutical cartel.

  7. Thank you for publishing this video. I had taken a few years ago glucosamine with chondroitin and I never felt it did anything. Now once again I feel knee pain and I was thinking of buying the product again until I just watched this video. I will save my money and start walking.

  8. Anyone familiar with these products causing atrial fibrillation? I've heard that and I have a relative that has been taken these supplements for years and has a-fib. Curious to know if there is a connection.

  9. Agree and disagree with the video. Agree with exercise and stretching, disagree on the fact that the supplements are not helpful. I've been weightlifting for 6 years, and naturally caught a couple of injuries along the way. Glucosamine/chondroitin/MSM helped me recover AND work through my injuries. Never used OTC painkillers or anti-inflammatory meds. Would strongly recommend Calcium/Magnesium/Vitamin D/Fish Oil for knee/joint pain as well. I include those as defaults in my daily regiment.

  10. Wow, that the same shit my doctor told me, go take over the counter drugs that didn't work. Or take a pad out of the back of my knee (but he had no idea if it would work). Naproxin and Ibuprofen drug companies probably flew this women and her family to Acapulco for a resort holiday so she'd say this shit on youtube.

This is the same shit my doctor told me to take for neck pain, and it made my stomache bleed to the point of having an ulcer almost. Fuck this shit, pushing drugs for big pharma, and last week they shit on Tesla. This channel is paid off or some shit, or there experts are really dumb a shit.

  11. Consumer reports might want to look at research that shows the alternatives to natural supplements meaning Nsaids and other drugs can destroy your kidneys and also can cause joint erosion.. the very thing they are taking drugs to relieve the pain from. And there is good research supporting glucosamine just not done ion this country because Big Pharma has their hands in all research here. CR always seems to cow tow to Big Pharma and white coat wearing medical doctors.

  12. Good advice about glucosamine and chondritic but very poor advice on non steroidal anti inflammatory medications. Let me enlighten you CR, all NSAID, including good old ibuprofen and aspirin, increase your blood pressure, cause water retention, increase risk of gastrointestinal bleeding and hepatitis, increase risk of heart attacks and strokes and have the potential to cause kidney failure. Please make sure you know what you are talking about. This is human life you are dealing with, not a washing machine buying advice.

  13. Wow, the pills have given my life back. I respect consumer reports, but they really should have consulted with more doctors on this. In cool with exercise info. I just don't get this doctor.

  14. That was a very poor CR video. They're taking the comments from one doctor and stating her claims as fact. How lame!

  15. ride a bike !!!!!!!!!!!!!! on the road or stationary. I had very had knees and I'm a forklift and truck driver. I rode my bike to work many times but when I rode it constantly for a year, about 3000 miles, my knees felt great. That's too many miles for most people but buy a trainer and an old bike and your set. Bike trainers can cost $50 to $200 so 20 minutes of research and you'll do what I did. Buy a decent quality USED name brand and you're set. 30 minutes of constant pedaling, no like in a " spin" class where you're killing yourself, but a little sweat is good. Good luck!!!

  16. Try Schwartz Turmeric Curcumin with Bioperine 1500 mg! Great for arthritis, joint pain, diabetes, etc. Before ingesting be sure to eat meal with fat in it and drink plenty water. Good stuff! Helpful for so many ailments….

  17. We recommend you to take ibuprofen that could damage your liver and cause you a lifetime ulcer within couple of weeks.

  18. I'm medical student, so I know how modern doctors don't like to try things on themselves or to listen patients. I had knee problems myself, I treated it with NSAID, and it's didn't worked. Glucosamine and chondroitin are part of cartilage, so how can anyone could make it mistake by trying. It's hard to explain how it works, BUT IT WORKED FOR ME. And I used the one with vitamins, so it's good both ways. NSAID did not helped me

  19. GLUCOSAMINE IS THE CAUSE OF DIABETES IN THE LONG RUN….TAKING GLUCOSAMINE TO HEAL CARTILAGE PROBLEMS DOES NOT LEAD TO COMPLETE HEALING…IT DOES NOT REGENERATE CARTILAGE…THIS A BILLION DOLLAR INDUSTRY THAT IS PROSPERING BECAUSE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MADE TO REALIZE THAT GLUCOSAMINE WILL HEAL YOUR CARTILAGE PROBLEMS…WELL TAKE GLUCOSAMINE AND ALL YOUR PAIN IS GONE….STOP TAKING IT AND YOUR PAIN COMES BACK…SO IT DOES NOT HEAL YOU….TRY AN ALTERNATE THERAPY FOR CARTILAGE HEALING…DEFINITELY WESTERN SCIENCE DOES NOT HAVE THE KNOWLEDGE HOW TO HEAL CARTILAGE. I WAS THINKING STEM CELLS DOES….OR ATLEAST THE DOCTOR I WENT TO SEE ABOUT PAIN MANAGEMENT TOLD ME HE CAN GIVE ME 2 STEM CELL INJECTIONS COSTING APPROX 3000 USD. I THEN WROTE TO A WORLD RENOWNED JAPANESE DOCTOR WHO TOLD ME THAT STEM CELLS ARE NOT PASSED AS A 100% TREATMENT BY THE JAPANESE HEALTH ADMINISTRATION SYSTEM. SO IT GOES TO SHOW THAT IN THE US DOCTORS WILL CHEAT YOU WITH FAKE MEDICATIONS AND TREATMENT. I TOOK CISSUS AND I TOOK A HOMEOPATHIC MEDICATION TO FINALLY GET MY CARTILAGE BACK.. WHEN I WENT TO THE DOCTOR TO GET THE MRI HE KEPT ASKING ME HOW I GOT MY CARTILAGE BACK…I SAID I WILL LET YOU KNOW LATER.

  20. What a disappointing article from CR. I've subscribed for years, however I have first hand experience with glucosamine. I use to run quite a bit, by the time I hit mid 50's knees hurt terribly. Osteoarthritis in both knees. Used advil, ibuprofen, knee wraps, etc. for pain. Nothing has helped like the glucosamine. It works for me.

  21. Of course not the ones from store shelf……junk fillers and sold by the pharmaceutical company, no surprise!!
