7 Signs of Low Vitamin D (How Many do You Have?)


Hey, this is Dr. Berry. In this short video, I want to talk to you about the seven signs that your vitamin D Level might be low. Now some of you may or have already caught on to the vitamin D epidemic of low vitamin D in the US and Canada, but many of you have not and that’s what I want to talk about today Vitamin D is a big deal if your levels are low chronically it can lead to suffering Early disease and early death and so we want to avoid those three things all we can. Now if you already know about vitamin D And you take a good supplement I bet you have friends and neighbors who do not know Please share this with them on your social media email it to them you can text them the link you can share this in any Number of ways to help me help even more people now, let’s talk about seven signs that your vitamin D Might be low and I may even talk about what you can do to fix it at the end We’ll see. So the number one for an adult, the number one sign that your vitamin D might be low is bone aches. Okay. If your bones ache, not your joints, but your actual bones themselves That’s actually if your vitamin D is Low that’s a condition called osteomalacia, which means painful bones and when your vitamin D Level is below 20 or 25 you can have osteomalacia or painful bones This is a sign that your bones are starving for vitamin D, they’re not being able to keep their bone density up where it needs to be this is your bones yelling at you “Hey, dummy take some vitamin D Or get out in the Sun.” right? so osteomalacia is a big deal if you don’t have enough vitamin D You can actually lead to osteopenia and ultimately Osteoporosis which are brittle bones and that that’s the condition that older folks have when they fall on the carpet and break the wrist. When you fall down on the carpet you shouldn’t break any bones; if you do, then you’ve been vitamin D Deficient for a long long time. So achy bones… that’s sign number one that you may have low vitamin D Sign number two is chronic fatigue, and I know, I know, I know, that’s the sign of about a thousand different possible conditions; But if you go see your doctor for chronic fatigue, one of the very first things he should check is a vitamin D 25 level to see if your level’s low. That’s an easy fix it’s an easy catch and easy fix if he checks the right lab work. So chronic fatigue can be from low vitamin D The next is if you have a fracture, a broken bone, from just a little bit of force If you step off the curb and break your ankle if you fall and break your wrist on carpet Right if you just like to fall off the couch and break your wrist That’s not normal human beings are made to bounce not to break and so I’ve seen so many patients in my office come for follow-up after they’ve been to the orthopedic surgeon for a broken wrist just like this: “I Was leaning over to get something to pick it up off the floor and just fall off the couch and broke my wrist.” That’s not normal. Okay, and the orthopedic surgeon did not check any blood work so when I checked their vitamin D Level It would be 8 or 12, and it should be over 40, Okay? So if you have a broken bone for no real reason, like if you’re coughing a lot from bronchitis and you break a rib, That’s not normal! that shouldn’t happen. You probably have low vitamin D. If you have frequent (this is number four), if you have frequent viral infections, like it seems like you have a cold every 10 minutes, right? or you Just have just repetitive infections way more often than your friends do, that could be a sign of low vitamin D; because keeping your vitamin D where it needs to be can actually protect you from infection. If you have (number five), if you have depressed mood… I don’t mean you know clinical depression, I’m talking about just depress, kind of down in the dumps, that can be from low vitamin D. More and more research is coming out to show that vitamin D is very un-inflammatory both for your brain and for other body tissues and … and so one of the things that you could have is a depressed mood if your vitamin D is very low. So part of the workup for Depression when you go to your doctor should be some blood work and within that blood work should be a vitamin D 25 level checked, and if it’s low it needs to be fixed. Number six is slow wound healing. if you get a cut or an abrasion and it seems like it just takes forever to heal, [coughs] if it seems like you heal far slower than your friends and family, then you may have low vitamin D. vitamin D is in charge of hundreds of biochemical reactions in your skin and other parts of your body and your skin just doesn’t heal as effectively if your vitamin D is low. So that’s another red flag that you may have low vitamin D. Number seven, it’s kind of like number one, but it’s different: If you have muscle aches, just your muscles ache for no real reason, now if you, you know, if you walked ten miles yesterday and that’s the first time you’ve done that in years, It makes sense that your muscles would ache; but if your muscles ache all the time and there’s no real reason for it, you may have low vitamin D. Obviously there are other things that could be so go see your dock and get a full lab panel and a full exam, but you may have low vitamin D. And something as simple as taking Vitamin D3 every day could fix your achy bones and your achy muscles. Number eight is basically if you live in the US and Canada, this is a bonus, if you live in the UK, if you live in the US, if you live in Canada, if you live anywhere up in the higher latitudes, you don’t get enough sun to make vitamin D, okay? And so my hierarchy my solution for you if your vitamin D is low is to get more sun. If you can’t do that then take it… then you can get more vitamin D in a good Ketogenic diet. if you’re eating grass-fed butter, that has vitamin D. If you’re eating the egg yolks from chickens who were able to run around in the yard and eat bugs and worms Those egg yolks have vitamin D3, right? So butter and then if you’re able to eat pork that’s been pasture raised and that and actually was allowed to run around and eat grub worms and acorns and other good things and play out in the Sun all day, that pork will have good vitamin D. And so I’d much prefer you get your vitamin D from the Sun and from your diet. But if you just have to have a supplement then make sure you’re taking a good vitamin D3 supplement, not D2! Maybe your doctor says “Oh, you need to take this vitamin D2 once a week or once a month.” Don’t take that! It’s just not as well absorbed as vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is a much more natural way to take it and so if… also a lot of people think dairy is a good way to get vitamin D. It’s a terrible way to get vitamin D. It’s been fortified with vitamin D2 as well, which is again not as well absorbed. So if you can’t get it from the Sun And you can’t get it from your diet then take a supplement. And some people need to get it from the sun, from their diet and take a supplement. It’s up to you; you decide which one of those people you are. But if you do take a supplement make sure it’s vitamin D3, make sure it’s in a in an oil-filled gel cap, and make sure that the oil they use is not soybean or canola oil. You can get one off Amazon with Olive oil and that’s much preferable to taking one with canola or soybean oil. So there you go, the seven signs that you might have low vitamin D And then just a bonus if you live in the US or Canada or the UK, Then you’re at very high risk of having it, because there’s just not a lot in the food supply And you don’t get enough Sun to really make up the difference.   2. If you have Sarcoidosis, you better be careful of the vitamin d. Side effects of vitamin d can be just as dangerous as being low.

  4. A few days after I got back from the beach for several days I went in for my first check up in YEARS. I mentioned that my gyno wanted me to get checked for diabetes and thyroid issues because they run in my family HEAVILY and I was having all of these weird symptoms like severe hair loss (coming out in clumps), constant fatigue (sleeping for 12 hours at a time), headaches, often infections, etc and she suggested I get my vitamin D tested and even right after coming back from the beach my vitamin D was very low. Prescribed supplements! Hopefully this helps!

    I've never felt any help from D3… No immunity boost, no nothing…
    On the other hand D2 is a miracle to me…
    Less overall body inflammation
    Far improved immunity.
    Based on 20 year experience, I believe D3 is nearly bogus, and D2 is the real deal, even though you read it different in books…

  7. I'm pretty sure taking D3/K2 helps my asthma. I used to use QVAR it was getting so bad but since taking it the problem has gone down considerably plus I was strict keto for a year until it stopped working then lazy keto (being ticked off) and the d3 still works. I practically work 24/7 so I'm never in the sun.

  8. Found out that I am Vitamin D deficient though my annual checkup. Didn’t realise how serious it could be if you’re deficient for too long! Only had the tiredness and frequent viral illness symptoms and I had put that down to stress

  9. Great Video! some months ago when I checked my Vitamin D it was 9! I had deep dull pain in my shoulders more so in my shoulder bones, and I could not even to lift my hands…After getting 2-3 continuous days of sun on my back and legs literally sunbathing for 30 min each day. the pain completely disappeared. it was like a miracle. I try to incorporate the sun every now and then into my life. Just confirming the importance of the Sun and Dr Berry's advice

  11. I had every one of the symptoms you listed, a broken wrist and a broken ankle before a Dr checked my Vitamin D. It was 8!! Happy to say it is normal now.

  12. I had terrible left shoulder and arm pain I chalked up to the way I slept for a couple of years. Heard about taking Vit D to help protect against breast cancer, started taking a suppliment. Within a few days my shoulder pain disappeared. I feel like I've experienced a miracle. And I know it's not a placebo effect because I had no clue it would help my pain. I feel like a new person.

  14. 2 reasons why we have a Vit D deficient is because the Corrupt medical system has everyone believing the BS Lie that the sun causes skin cancer so everyone is not going in the sun or wearing a bunch of sunscreen which actually does cause skin cancer and then there is the Corrupt Gov blocking our sun with their Evil Chemtrail nonsense being sprayed to stop the made-up fake global warming bs, chemicals that are also causing breathing problems.

  16. Are you supposed to take calcium with it? I am taking fish oil and d3 with calcium? The vitamin d3 and calcium is a pill. Should I take a different kind my test was for vitamin d results were d2 was number 4 and the other numbers added together on my test added up to 33 altogether. Should I be taking the calcium I have vascular disease with 2 stance in the left iliac artery.

  17. One evening I could not move my back. Needed help sitting up, standing up, walking and sitting. When I would swing my legs from side to side there was a feeling of friction in my lower back. Went to the emergency room and 200.00 later,they gave me a pain patch. found out from my Doctor that my Vitamin D level was 8.

  18. I noticed horrific muscle cramps, at this same time vitamin d level was 12. After taking high dose suppliment, they went away. Also on prolea, up graded from osteoporosis to osteopenia (was negative 3 something in back and negative 2 something in hips, but last dexa scan was improved).

  19. One thing it happens to me when it's winter is skin swelling because I don't go out much and wear long sleeves, so I don't take too much sun. I try to eat as much vitamin D from cereals and milk as possible.

  20. Several years ago, I had a scare with creeping tingling sensation & numbness starting in my right arm & progressing to my right leg. Started to have heart beat irregularities, and hair was dropping out. Went through tests with several docs concerned I might have MS.
    My GP ran tests that found I was critically low on Vitamin D.
    I was indoors all day at work.
    In winter, I'd go to work in the dark, then go home in the dark.
    I also avoided dairy & meat at the time…(no more ! )
    All Ok now, taking D & K supplements. It is something to be aware of, especially in winter.

  21. yeah mine was like 12 no wonder i caught pneumonia in the winter of 2017 took the supplement the winter of 2018 you actually can feel it no colds at all that winter i start to take it around fall when the days get shorter

  22. You MUST take D3 WITH magnesium, it can't work properly without magnesium. If your D3 level is low, you have low magnesium levels. I'm surprised he didn't mention magnesium.

  24. My vitamin D was 4. I hurt everywhere. I have sjogrens disease and discoid lupus and being outside can lead to terrible flare ups. 😥

  25. My doctor checked just bc I was getting sick all the time and very tired… my level was 0. He couldn’t believe it.. he called the med student over to show him it was actually 0.

  27. New scribe here! My last Dr. Appt. My vitamin d was low. I take calcium 600 mg. Is that the right thing to take? My next appt. Is coming up Oct. 1 guess I'll find out then! I do get sun.

  28. Thank you for this information!! I believe that's my problem (low Vit D-3) because all of a sudden my muscles in my arms, hands and shoulders are very achy. I exercise, but it doesn't help the achy joints. Will try the Vit D-3.

  29. Got my blood work done for the first time in 5 years and it came back with vit D at 14, I've been put on a prescription once a week pill for 3 months and another supplement every day forever. It's only been 2 weeks and already I am not so damn tired all the time.
    I am mad that for a couple years now I've been feeling bad but all that time I attributed the symptoms to being so fat, or to my age, or my ADHD and diagnosed mood disorder/anxiety/depression (really all 4 issues go hand in hand) I noted last summer I was healing much slower than before and that every little scratch seemed to get infected and scar, and my body ached all the time, but I thought it was age or because I was fat. I could never sleep through the night waking 2-5 times, and I was always so tiiiiiiired just needing random naps unable to fight the fatigue, but I thought those problems were tied to my mental issues.
    So far I have only been on it long enough to see improvement in fatigue, but ho boy, I am hoping by Xmas at the end of the 3 months of pills I will be loads better, I NEED to have a better winter than last year, my seasonal depression had me sleeping almost all the time ;__;

  30. I take a D3 supplement because after a blood test my doctor said I was deficient. And I live in the Pacific Northwest so the sun doesn't like to come out a lot. Many people move here because we don't like sunlight. Ironic, huh? I do take mine religiously and have felt better and it did pay off because I had fallen onto concrete really hard and I thought I broke my hip, leg, arm, forearm, and wrist. Basically my right side. But I was fortunate that there were no fractures, but I did herniate two discs and that is a whole long story by itself. But D3 helped me.

  32. Hi Dr. Berry, another question – I have VDR TAQ, a Vitamin D receptor mutation. Could you please comment on what that could do to my ability to absorb D? At my last test, my D was in the 20s even though it was springime. I live in Milford, PA so I'm in the "northeast". Thank you!

  33. My D was only 23 in March of last year 🙁 I had aaaaalll the aches, etc. I even had that weird osteomalacia "walk" – oh my god! I did 23 and Me and found out that I have VDR-TAQ which is a problem with my Vitamin D Receptors. How do I supplement, to make sure my bones will be ok? I tried D3 plus K2 MK-7 and got a really heavy period, so I was scared to take D3 or K2 because the K2 keeps your bones solid. I'm interested in your opinion of how I should supplement.   34. I take a D3 supplement and after watching this I checked the label, sure enough they are made with soybean oil. Thanks for the knowledge, I just ordered some made with olive oil from Amazon and will make the switch.

  36. Had all those symptoms besides broken bones my level was 30. My doc put me on D3 and K2 and 3 months later I feel a ton better he wants my level between 80-100

  37. If you have these symptoms and have low vitamin D levels do please check your blood calcium and pth hormone. I have hyper-para-thyroidism and achy bones and bone loss is a big red flag of this disease and this disease causes low vitamin D levels. I have all of these symptoms plus more. It might be a bigger problem than just low vitamin D and it only gets worse with time.

  39. For any with "Auto Immune" issues such as MS. At one point my thyroid was shutting down on top of everything else. It was my primary doc that actually called for testing D levels. I was low…. Told to supplement… and sure enough my thyroid levels came back to healthy normal. Best of Prayers and Blessings all!

    Then had a bone scan i have osteopina i take 500mg/400iu calcium and vitamin D3 supplements for first 12 weeks i was on just hi dosage of D3

  42. Please stop telling people they can get vitamin d from the sun. Sunlight, ultraviolet light acts as a catalyst. It catalyzes the vitamin d already in your system making it readily available for the body to use. Vitamin d does not come from photons. If you are not ingesting vitamin d then no amount of sun will make a difference.

  44. I will bet that a lot of "clinical depression" is caused by things just like this. Psychologists and psychiatrists are not trained, in general, to think in terms of vitamin deficiencies.

  45. Been taking vitamin D supplies for a long time now since the levels were critically low. But I still feel crappy. :/

  46. I have Ankylosing Spondylitis, Depression, Anxiety, Hypothyroidism, Otosclerosis, Sleep Apnea, Plantar Fasciitis, IBS, seasonal and environmental Allergies too. I take a multiple Vitamin every day and Vitamin D3 1,000mg 3× a day. I still hurt all over and am tired, depressed. How much vitamin D3 can you take without overdosing?
    I take other supplements also, turmeric/curcumin, Omega-3 fish oil, coconut oil, extra vitamin C, I take Vitamin B Complex 50mg 3 times a day, Coq10, extra calcium w/magnesium.
    I take several medications as well including Sulfasalazine (Anti inflammatory) Gabatril, Zoloft, Levothyroxine. I still feel like SHIT!!

    I need both knees replaced, and I need back and neck surgery.
    I have had a Stapendectomy in both my ears, 2 arthroscopic surgeries (1 on each knee)
    Right Inguinal Hernia surgery and a Reconstruction of my ACL.
    I still work a 60 hour work week
    Then I come home and walk my dog for 3 miles each day.
    Thinking I need to be on disability.
    Oh by the way I'm only 49.😢

  49. I had it, but had only one superficial sign (males 50) – my face skin was rashy.
    Once I was diagnosed, I made changes to my sun and diet and have been fine ever since.
